Back in 2015, a 12-year-old kid from Oklahoma wrote to all 32 NFL teams declaring himself a “free agent” and asking them why he should root for their team. Amazingly, only the Carolina Panthers wrote back. So the kid became a Panthers fan, and they Panthers got a ton of free publicity.
Apparently a lot of teams learned their lesson.
This past summer, a 23-year-old reddit user who goes by the name The_Champ_Is_Here_14 decided to try his hand at this gimmick. He wrote to all 32 NFL teams and asked them why he should make them his team. In his post on reddit, he did not mention the 12-year-old from Oklahoma. Instead, he said he was inspired by an English guy who wrote to 92 different English soccer clubs.
The_Champ_Is_Here_14 received responses from 14 teams, many of which included free swag.
Take a look:
In the end, six teams just sent swag—the Texans, Jets, Raiders, Jags, Chargers, and Bills. Two sent swag and a generic response—the Broncos and Cardinals. And six sent swag plus a personalized response—the Bears, Patriots, Packers, Panthers, Redskins, and Colts.
(In case you’re wondering, no, the Jets did not send tickets. Those are apparently schedules that attach to your keychain.)
The overwhelming majority of reddit users thought the Bears should have won The_Champ_Is_Here_14′s heart. They were blown away that somebody over at Bears headquarters actually took the time to send a handwritten note, which, when you think about it, says a lot about our society.
However, the original poster says it came down to the Packers or the Panthers, and in the end he went with the Panthers.
“Quickness of response was a big one,” he explained. “The panthers, patriots, and colts were the first three teams I received a response from after about a week. But I am hoping to go to graduate school in the Charlotte area so I thought it was only fitting to be a Panthers fan.”
Which team would you have gone with?
